Holiday Cottages Near The Tarka Trail and Footpath Network In North Devon

Explore North Devon on foot or by bike via the Tarka Trail and Footpath Network

The footpath network in and around North Devon is one of the most well cared for and well sign posted networks in the country. The footpath is a just short walk from Combrew Farm, meaning that you can leave your car behind.

Just across the main road at the end of our lane is Fremington Pill - a tidal inlet which leads you down to Fremington Quay. This used to be a busy quay for the local clay and brickwork industries. The old railway line is now part of the 'Tarka Trail', which stretches 31 miles between Braunton and Meeth. This mostly flat off road track offers an easy walking or cycling route which is suitable for the whole family. The original station buildings have been transformed into a superb café where Combrew guests are always met with a warm welcome. A large old lime kiln still overlooks the quay.

We run our very own cycle hire service here at the farm which is very popular with guests looking to explore the area on two wheels. We have bikes suitable for all ages, with prices starting from only £6 per day.

Hop on the Bus and Discover More of the West Country

The main road at the end of our lane is served by regular buses that run into the night. Head towards Westward Ho! to go through Instow, Bideford and Northam, or head in the opposite direction to go to Barnstaple, Braunton, Saunton, Croyde and Ilfracombe. Dogs are allowed on local busses for a small fee.

The Tarka Trail runs alongside the rivers Taw and Torridge, and passes through Bideford (the ‘Little White Town’), Instow, Barnstaple and Braunton, so you have the option to walk back if you wish.

Along the Tarka Trail, there are many places of interest, such as the old railway station in Bideford where you’ll find a quirky café that has been built into one of the old train carriages. In Instow, you’ll find a restored old signal box and many dog friendly pubs and cafes for refreshment. From Instow, you can look across the river to Appledore Shipyard, which often has large impressive ships moored outside.
