Tarka Tennis Centre

Tarka Tennis is a fantastic tennis and sports centre in Barnstaple, located in the rolling hills beside the River Taw. This lively tennis centre has 10 tennis courses (6 indoor & 4 outdoors) as well as table tennis, badminton, gymnastics and pilates facilities.

The courts can be hired for ‘free play’ games, however, if you fancy improving your game, private coaching and group courses are also available. If you’re not keen on playing and would rather watch or relax with a cup of coffee, there is an indoor balcony and a coffee lounge/bar area. There are also viewing areas with seating around the outside courts.

Calling all adrenaline junkies! The Keypitts quad biking centre offers an exhilarating day out for kids and ‘big kids’ aged 6+. Blast through fields, mud, and puddles on a Suzuki 50cc, Yamaha 50cc/80cc, a 90cc Hondas or a 125cc Yamaha Breeze – there is a quad for everyone!  

All track days start with a full safety briefing from an experienced instructor. After the briefing, you’ll be assessed on a practice track and asked to carry out vital manoeuvres. If you feel as though you need a little more guidance, one-on-one tuition is available.

Keypitts also offer a white knuckle off road driving experience in a 4 x 4 Land Rover Discovery. This thrilling 30-minute session takes you across 200 acres of challenging terrain.

The Tarka Trail

The Tarka Trail can be accessed less than a mile from Combrew, at Fremington Quay. The popular track takes in all the beauty of North Devon and is a wonderful way to explore the area, whether you’re walking or cycling. A stretch of the route makes use of the old Tarka Line railway – reminders of the route’s past, such as railway signage, can be seen at various stages of the trail.

The beautiful route passes through numerous towns, including: Barnstaple, Bideford, Torrington, Hatherleigh, Okehampton, Lynmouth and Ilfracombe. Cafes and pubs are dotted along the track to keep you fuelled!

A great variety of landscapes, including wooded river valleys, rugged moorland, coastal cliffs, and sandy bays can all be found along the Tarka Trail – it’s a photographer’s dream! Walking varies between easy and strenuous depending on the location.
