Walks around Combrew Farm and North Devon

walking the coastpath near HartlandCombrew Farm is situated in the heart of the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It is also within the North Devon Biosphere Reserve, one of only two biosphere reserves in the UK. The area is recognised for its excellent landscape quality.

Within about a 25 minute drive you can also enjoy the Exmoor National Park with its deep wooded combes, open moorland and stunning coastal cliffs, the highest in the UK.

The footpath network in this area is among the best, well cared for and well sign posted. You can walk direct from Combrew Farm, leaving your car behind. Just across the main road, at the end of our lane, is Fremington Pill, a tidal inlet which leads you down to Fremington Quay. This used to be a busy quay for the local clay and brickworks. The old railway line is now part of the 'Tarka Trail' and offers 31 miles of easy off-road walking or cycling. The original station buildings are now a superb cafe with a cycle hire next door. A large old lime kiln still overlooks the quay.

The main road has frequent regular buses in both directions. These can take you to Bideford where you can enjoy walking around the 'white town' before walking back along the Tarka Trail on the level old railway track. This runs alongside the Rivers Taw and Torridge estuary, passing by Instow with the Appledore shipyard on the opposite bank. At Instow there is the restored old signal box and plenty of places for refreshment.

Buses in the other direction will take you to Barnstaple and on around the estuary to Braunton where again you can walk the level Tarka Trail back towards Barnstaple and on to Fremington Quay to return to Combrew.
